  105. Oldest license found - 5YM - dated 6/4/20, but there is anecdotal 
  106. evidence that we may have been licensed in 1914. The station was 
  107. active in the early '20s prior to the opening of KFMQ, the U of A's 
  108. first broadcast station. Logs have been found for the '32-'34 period 
  109. when the station (*W*5YM) was active on 'phone using a Class B 
  110. modulation amplifier built as a class project. Loy Barton, inventor 
  111. of Class B, was a graduate and faculty member of the U of A. 
  112. Haven't found any relics from '34 - '49.  1949 we were granted 
  113. W5JNI and our station was in the then-Business Admin building. 
  114. We suspect the trustee knew nothing of the previous station as 
  115. he was not in engineering. We returned to W5YM in 1952 and the 
  116. club has  been going strong pretty much ever since.

  180. I worked on this last year. Essentially, we were formed
  181. in 1914 as one of the first stations on the west coast. 
  182. We started DX receiving experiments at this time, and 
  183. soon established skeds with the University of Washington 
  184. and a few other schools. Our first call was 6BB and dates
  185. back to at least 1920. I think oneof our members was the 
  186. first woman to get a commercial radiotelephone operators 
  187. license in 1924. Early on we were also connected withthe 
  188. commercial station here at Cal, and did early broadcasts 
  189. from football games, alumni dinners, etc. Club fell into 
  190. decline in the1930's, but was revived after the war, 
  191. and has followed typical boomand bust cycles since.

  279.   We're still looking for our roots, but have narrowed it down to 1947.  
  280. That's about as good as it gets for now, but we're looking for more 
  281. history on our club.

  283. Our club is an Engineering Department affiliated club, but recently we're 
  284. attracting members from other walks of life, adding to our diversity.  
  285. We're involved in ARES/RACES, with our station being capable of running 
  286. on our own emergency generator at a moment's notice.  
  287.  
  288. We've recently obtained a high-level mountaintop site, and are working on 
  289. the basics there (ie: electricity, antenna masts, etc) and look forward 
  290. to expanding our local coverage.  Current plans for the mountaintop include:
  291.   440 repeater linked to our 146.760 repeater on campus (w/autopatch)
  292.   2m crossband repeater (linked to 440 repeater) with two-tone paging
  293.     capabilities for ARES/RACES callouts
  294.   2m repeater on the WALA (Western Amateur Linking Association) system
  295.   2m digipeater on the Packet DX-Cluster
  296.   440 digipeater for high-speed digital (56kb?) for real-time Internet
  297.

  437. The club has been around for many years. The original
  438. club was W0YI. It was founded over 75 years ago. The
  439. W0YI club call is still maintained here at ISU by one 
  440. of our faculty members.

  442. Our club has approximately 20 members who are somewhat 
  443. active. There are many more hams here at ISU, but many 
  444. of them are too busy with their studies and other clubs
  445. to become involved with the CARC. We are always in 
  446. search of new membership.
  447.  
  448. Our members can usually be found on 2meters or 70cm.
  449. At this point in time, there is very little HF activity
  450. in the club.
  451. Our club has been involved at ISU for many years. We have
  452. meetings several times per month. Every spring, we set up
  453. an open house display and help with communications for the
  454. annual VEISHEA celebration, which is the largest student-run
  455. event of its kind in the United States. We provide 
  456. communications for the VEISHEA parade, calling tow trucks,
  457. ambulances, and the police if the need arises.
  458. It is best for new prospective members or people 
  459. interested in the club to call me or Clyde Walter at
  460. the numbers above. I am only at ISU during the Fall and
  461. Spring semesters, while Clyde is a professor who is here
  462. year around if the need arises to contact the club in the
  463. summer months.

  483.  JCARS was started in 1981 with the primary focus of satellite
  484.  operation. We were the first Ham radio club in central Pennsylvania to have
  485.  an active satellite station and were early users of Oscar 8 and Oscar 10.
  486.      JCARS offered amateur radio classes from 1981 thru 1993 for the college
  487.  students as well as local citizens.  We are going to resume these classes
  488.  this winter as well as offering licensing exams on a regular basis as we have
  489.  in the past.

  542. The MTSU club has been around since at least the 1960s, first as a 
  543. trusteeship of the Dept. of Industrial Studies, and now under the 
  544. Dept. of Computer Science. Membership has been small because the 
  545. historic mission of the University was that of a teacher's college 
  546. (thankfully that's changing). The Raider Amateur Radio Club is a 
  547. key player in the packet radio field, and its members provide part 
  548. of the core support in a project to bring high-speed (56k bps and 
  549. up) packet connectivity to the entire state of Tennessee, from 
  550. Mountain City to Memphis.

  589. HISTORY
  590.  The Northwestern Amateur Radio Society dates back until late
  591. 40s or early 50s. It has been affiliated with the McCormick
  592. school of Technology and the department of Electrical
  593. Engineering since its inception. The club has achieved many
  594. awards over the years, including one of the very early 5-band
  595. DXCC's.
  596.  
  597. In 1991 a storm took down our main tower and antenna, and the
  598. shack had fallen into disrepair. However, in 1992 Drs. Allen
  599. Taflove and Alan Sahakian took over the faculty advisor
  600. position, and launched an effort to bring the station back on
  601. the air. In the summer of 1992 a new tower was erected at a
  602. better rooftop spot than before at a cost of over $10,000, and
  603. faculty and student members together cleaned and renovated the
  604. shack, and the old transceiver equipment was replaced. We
  605. also pulled in Ethernet cabling for Internet, and got a
  606. computer (w9bgx.nuars.nwu.edu).

  608. We are currently looking into holding a course in the
  609. Department of Electrical Engineering which will use the
  610. resources of the Amateur Radio club, and hope it will increase
  611. student participation.

  791. W2SZ was originally created as 2SZ by the Troy YMCA around 1910. It 
  792. was turned over  to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1917 where 
  793. it has been providing services to its members and the community 
  794. ever since.

  796. The station provides Amateurs with an opportunity to keep in contact 
  797. with friends at home as well as providing for the learning of radio 
  798. and basic electronics. The station also provides a friendly and 
  799. relaxed atmosphere where members can come to get away from the 
  800. stress of classes and work.

  802. W2SZ, known to members are Zed, is a friendly group of people that 
  803. are willing to share their knowledge and help those who have an 
  804. interest in ham radio to get, or advance, their license. In addition 
  805. they are willing to share their knowledge in the proper maintenance 
  806. and operation of both club and personal equipment.

  808. The club currently consists of about 30 members and is located at 
  809. Six Sunset Terrace, Troy, NY. It also has contact with many of the 
  810. past members who have long since graduated from RPI, or community 
  811. members who live in the Troy area. It provides the members with 
  812. many contacts,  and also provides the community with a viable method 
  813. of communication through the repeaters that the club has. In 
  814. addition to day to day communications, W2SZ also offers lines of 
  815. communication during periods of crisis. Examples of the Club's 
  816. community involvement were during the San Francisco earthquake, 
  817. and during Operation Desert Storm.

  847. University of Rhode Island was previously known as the Rhode Island State
  848. College until the 1950s.)  Members played an active role in the founding of one
  849. of the original eleven college broadcast radio stations, now WRIU-FM.

  851. Civil defense commitments have included operations during the Great Hurricane
  852. of 1938 and Hurricane Carol of 1954, in addition to numerous other situations. 
  853. At various times, the club has done work in earth-moon-earth, satellite,

  855. New England to use packet radio.

  858. top floor of the Taft Experimental Laboratory in 1986.  Taft antedates the

  969. We have a club call W0QEV that has been ours at least since 1947 
  970. which is the oldest log that we can find. The league claims that 
  971. we have been affiliated with them since 1949 which makes us one 
  972. of the older if not oldest club station in the zero call region. 
  973. This far back though and nobody really knows. Someday we will have 
  974. to search though old call books from just after the war to see just 
  975. when that call appears.

  977. The club started as part of the department of electrical engineering 
  978. here. It became a student union organization around a decade ago and 
  979. as a result has a steady source of funds. As far as membership, if 
  980. only that was as steady as funding. The club has students, 
  981. graduate students, professors, university staff and even alumni. 
  982. Probably around 20 members but only half that many are easy to 
  983. get a hold of. There are always to few undergrads!

  985. An addendum to the above. After the war st. louis became part of 
  986. the zero district as opposed to the old nine district. We have 
  987. reason to believe that the club was around even before the war, 
  988. but don't know under which call or how we can research this.
